Attendance - Presenoldeb

Attendance is taken very seriously at HHVCS and we are working hard to help students achieve the minimum expectation of 95% attendance.

We believe that:

  • Regular attendance promotes the effective and continuous learning of all students
  • Regular attendance promotes positive friendships and well-being
  • Good habits of attendance and punctuality will assist to develop self-discipline and responsibility in preparation for future employment

There is a wealth of evidence which shows that significant absence from school can have a severe negative impact on a child’s achievement. Put quite simply, a child cannot learn if they are not there. Failure to attend school increases the risk of leaving school without qualifications and allows greater opportunity for young people to be drawn into crime and antisocial behaviour. Finally, we believe that failing to attend school on a regular basis is a safeguarding and welfare matter.

If students achieve 100% attendance, they still have 175 days of holiday.

Statutory Responsibilities Parents/Carers

Under the Education Act 1996, parents/carers are responsible for making sure that their children receive efficient full time education.

Section 7 of the Act states that:

The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him/her
to receive efficient, full time education, suitable to his/her age, aptitude
and ability and to any special educational needs he/she may have, either
by regular attendance at school or otherwise.

Section 444 further states that:

If a child of compulsory school age who is registered pupil at a school
fails to attend regularly at the school, the parent is guilty if an offence

What does your child’s attendance percentage mean?

Parents/carers often become confused about what good attendance is.

As a school, our target attendance percentage is 95%.

Attendance Percentage Days Missed - over a school year
100% 0 days
95% 10 days
90% 20 days
85% 30 days
80% 40 days

If your child has a 90% attendance record, it means that he/she has missed one half-day  from school each week, which is equivalent to missing four whole weeks of lessons in the school year and will impact of their learning.

If your child has a 85% attendance record, it means that he/she has missed one day from school each week, which is equivalent to missing six whole weeks of lessons in the school year and will have a major impact on their  learning.

If your child has an 80% attendance record, it means that he/she has missed two days from school each week, which is equivalent to missing eight whole weeks of lessons in the school year and will have a serious effect on learning.

This is the HHVCS Attendance Zone, which shows your attendance and the impact it is having on your education. They show the clear relationship between good attendance and achievement in school.

The rewards for excellent attendance are clear: Pupils are more likely to enjoy school, achieve better results and have increased opportunities and life chances.
